Most questions are answered below. If yours isn't, email us — a real person reads it.

Getting started

Which platforms is Expenseum on?

iPhone and iPad via the App Store (opens in a new tab), and Android via Google Play (opens in a new tab). It is the same app on both, and a backup taken on one restores on the other.

Do I need an account?

No. Install the app and start keeping books immediately — everything is stored on your device. Sign in only when you want Google Drive backup, split books, collaboration, the forum, referrals or Plus. You can sign in with Apple, with Google, or with an email address and password.

What is a “book”?

A book is one ledger — one household, one business, one trip, one side hustle. Each book has its own currency, categories, budget, entries and reports, so nothing bleeds between them. Make as many as you want.

How do I add an entry quickly?

Three ways. Type it in the normal editor; tap the mic and say something like “spent 250 on fuel today”; or scan a receipt and let the app fill in the amount, date and note. Anything you repeat can be saved as a template or set to recur.

Can I bring in data from another app?

Yes, through CSV import. Open the book, choose Import CSV, and map your columns — the screen lists which are required and which are optional. You can merge with what's already there or replace it.

Backup & restore

How do I move to a new phone?

On the old device: Settings → Backup → Back up now, to Google Drive. On the new one: install Expenseum, sign in with the same Google account, and restore from backup history. If you'd rather not use Drive, back up to a file, move the file across, and restore from local file.

Can I switch between iPhone and Android?

Yes. The backup format is the same on both platforms, so back up on one, restore on the other. A Plus subscription, though, belongs to the store you bought it in — an App Store purchase doesn't carry over to Google Play, or the other way round.

Can I make backups automatic?

Yes — turn on scheduled device backups and automatic Google Drive backup, and pick how often they run. The app keeps dated restore points so you can go back to a specific day rather than just the newest copy.

I restored the wrong backup.

Open backup history and restore an earlier restore point. Because each backup is kept separately, restoring one doesn't destroy the others — which is exactly why the history exists.

Can you recover my data if I lost my phone?

Only if you had a backup. Your books live on your device and are never uploaded to us, so we hold no copy to restore from. If Drive backup was on, sign in on the new device and it'll be there.

I deleted something by accident.

Check the Recycle Bin — items deleted by you or a collaborator are recoverable there for 30 days.

Split books

My friend doesn't have Expenseum. Can I still split with them?

Yes. Add them by email and they'll appear in the balances straight away. They'll get an invitation, and when they install the app and sign in with that same email the book is waiting under “Shared with you”.

How do I split unevenly?

When you add the expense, choose how it divides — equally, by exact amount, by percent or by shares — and pick who actually paid. You can set several payers on one expense. The running balances update for everyone in the book.

Does “settle up” move money?

No. Expenseum records the settlement so the balances clear; the actual payment happens however you normally pay each other. The app never touches your money.

Someone is ignoring their balance.

Send a reminder from the book — the app will nudge them by notification and email, so you don't have to write the awkward message yourself.

Expensight AI

What can the assistant actually do?

Answer questions about your own books — totals, comparisons, categories, outliers — and, if you allow it, log transactions, create categories, and set up books, budgets and goals for you.

How do I stop it changing my data?

Settings → AI Assistant → set the permission to Read-only. You can also leave “confirm before changes” on, which shows you each change to approve before anything is saved.

The assistant isn't answering.

It needs an internet connection and an active Plus subscription. If both look fine, close and reopen the chat — and if it still won't reply, email us with the question you asked.

Is my data sent anywhere?

When you send a message, it and the relevant parts of your books go to Google's Gemini API to generate the reply. That's the only time your book data is used for AI. Full details in the privacy policy.

Plus & billing

What do I get with Plus, and how is it priced?

Plus unlocks the Expensight AI assistant, split books and collaboration, budgets and goals, cashflow insights, receipt scanning, recurring entries, custom fields and CSV/PDF reports. It comes in five lengths — a 7-day pass, 30 days, 3 months, 6 months or a year. The 7-day pass is a one-off; the longer plans renew until you cancel. Pricing is set per country, so the App Store or Google Play shows you the exact amount in your own currency before you confirm.

How do I cancel?

On iPhone or iPad: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Expenseum → Cancel. On Android: Google Play → Menu → Subscriptions → Expenseum → Cancel. Do it at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Plus keeps working until the period you've paid for ends.

I paid but Plus isn't unlocked.

Make sure you're signed in with the same store account that made the purchase, then reopen the subscription screen so the app can re-check with the store. On iPhone you can also tap Restore purchases. Still locked after a few minutes? Email us with the order number from your App Store or Google Play receipt.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by the store you bought from — reportaproblem.apple.com for App Store purchases, or your Google Play order history for Android. If it's a problem with the app rather than a change of mind, tell us — we'd rather fix it.

What happens to my books if I cancel?

They stay exactly as they are. Nothing is deleted, nothing is hidden — the Plus-only features lock, and unlock again if you resubscribe.

How do referral rewards work?

Share your code from Invite Friends. When someone redeems it, you both get 7 days of Plus. Codes are one redemption per person.

Troubleshooting

Reminders and notifications aren't arriving.

On iPhone: Settings → Notifications → Expenseum, and check Focus modes aren't silencing them. On Android: allow notifications for Expenseum, and check battery optimisation isn't restricting the app — aggressive power saving is the usual culprit for scheduled reminders that never fire.

Receipt scanning misreads the amount.

It reads best on a flat, well-lit receipt shot straight on, with the total in frame. If it can't find a field it leaves it blank rather than guessing — you can always correct it before saving.

Voice entry doesn't hear me.

Allow the microphone and speech-recognition permissions, and check that your device's speech recognition supports the language you're speaking. Short phrases with the amount and a word or two of context work best.

Something looks wrong in a shared book.

Balances are built from what members enter, so start by checking the underlying expenses and who was marked as payer. If the numbers still don't add up, email us with the book name and roughly when it went wrong.

Still stuck?

Email info@appentium.com with your device model, iOS or Android version, app version (Settings → About) and what you were doing when it went wrong. Screenshots help enormously.
